The folks at Duluth Running Co. have a very busy night ahead of them.
After a regular day of business today at 1217 E. Superior Street, they are moving the whole store two blocks west to new digs at 1026 E. Superior St.
“We’ll close at six (p.m.) Friday and work through the night,†said store manager Tony Stensland. “Literally, we’re open here Friday and open there on Saturday.â€
The new space is 3,800-square feet, more than twice the size of the current store.
“We’ve outgrown our current location,†explained owner Clint Agar. “There’s not enough room in our warehouse area. We’ve grown a lot consistently every year. We just needed to make another jump.â€
The current store is tucked away in the extension of the Plaza Shopping Center on the upper side of Superior Street. The new space is in a refurbished brick building on the lower side of Superior Street overlooking Leif Erikson Park and Lake Superior. It’s bright and inviting with gray and blue walls, lots of big windows, bamboo floors, under a high ceiling of exposed piping, painted white for that trendy industrial look.
Agar calls it “industrial chic.â€
There’s lots of parking in the back, off London Road where there’s a back entrance to the store.
The business, which focuses on runners’ needs, is five years old. Agar said he’d been looking to move to a bigger site for about a year where he can offer customers more services and lines of products.
The soft opening Saturday from 10 to 5 p.m., precedes the official grand opening celebration from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the shop. That’s when the dignitaries show up for the ribbon-cutting, but the public is invited.
