It’s so big that it ranked extremely high on the list of the state’s Top 50 employers, compiled recently by Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal.
Essentia Health ranked 16th for the second year in the row, based on the number of its in-state employees. Based in Duluth, the Essentia health care system has nearly 9,550 employees. Essentia includes SMDC health system, Innovis Health and Essentia Community Hospitals and Clinics. All totaled, it has 13,200 employees throughout its multi-state system, the Journal reported.
But it’s dwarfed by the top employer, the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, which has about 41,400 employees in Minnesota. Former top employer, the state of Minnesota, came in second with 36,900 employees, while the Target Corp. came in third with 31,100 workers in Minnesota.
The Benedictine Health System in Duluth also made the list, coming in 35th (up from 41 last year) with 4,750 employees in Minnesota. The Catholic nonprofit provides long-term care through independent housing, assisted living, nursing care and rehabilitation services.
