Watch out for “One-Ring Scheme”

It starts out as a mystery call to your cellphone. From an international prefix. It’ll ring just once and disconnect or the caller hangs up when you answer.

Your curious about that strange number, perhaps enough to dial it back. The scammers are counting on that.

Call it back and you’re routed to an international adult entertainment or a chat line where the charges build rapidly.

Most often the prefix is 473 which covers Grenada. Sometimes it’s 809 (Dominican Republic), 876 (Jamaica), 284 (British Virgin Islands) or 268 (Antigua).

The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota put out the alert on Tuesday, warning that the region is currently being targeted. It’s advising people to watch their cellphone statements and contact their carrier right away if strange or unauthorized charges are noticed.
